Forked from Ripple's codebase by Jed McCaleb, Stellar's ecosystem runs on its own Stellar Consensus Protocol and is stewarded by the nonprofit Stellar Development Foundation. Introduced in 2015, Stellar positions itself as a modern alternative to SWIFT for B2B cross-border payments: local "Anchor" partners accept a business's home currency and pay out the destination currency through the network, letting both sides transact in their own currency without a correspondent bank or multi-day settlement delay. It's been used by firms like MoneyGram for remittances, and the Stronghold (SHX) token is also built on Stellar's rails.

How it works

  1. User initiates transfer
  2. Anchor converts fiat ↔ asset
  3. Stellar Consensus Protocol validates
  4. Funds arrive via receiving anchor
